Chelvan and 33 Bedford Row would like to give special thanks to Stonewall and African Rainbow Family Aderonke Apata for the intervention before the Strasbourg Court in MI v Switzerland (12 November 2024 judgment).
Please see below some extracts from this prestigious interview:
"What is the best decision you have taken as a lawyer?
To continue as a lawyer following the unexpected death of my husband, Mark Chelvan-Stanmore, last March. For 22 years Mark was my soulmate, husband, lover and best friend — we were a team. He will always be at my side, guiding and supporting me.
Who do you most admire in the law?
My refugee and migrant clients. The physical and emotional journey involved in seeking sanctuary includes battling a hostile environment. We know the majority who claim asylum are granted refugee status or subsidiary protection. We need to remember it is not illegal to claim asylum.
What is the best advice you have received?
“Passion, intelligence, compassion”. Words Mark used to describe why he was in love with me. “Your passion” are the words used by my past and present clients on why I must carry on representing refugees and migrants."
