  • Year of Call 2018

Introduction

Nick came to the Bar as a converting student after reading dual honours Russian and Politics and graduating from the Saint Petersburg State University and Yaroslavl Demidov State University. After successful completion of the GDL and BPTC, he went on to complete his pupillage in Sheffield and qualify fully in 2020.

On the way to the Bar, Nick spent time as both a County Court advocate and a paralegal working in insurance fraud; during his time as the latter, he worked on the landmark private prosecution of a fraudulent litigant after a finding of fundamental dishonesty.

Nick's practice encompasses a broad range of criminal, civil and family matters spanning the Magistrates Court, Crown Court and County Court.

Family

Nick regularly acts in single and multi-day private law hearings concerning Child Arrangements Orders, Prohibited Steps Orders and Specific Issue Orders including education, healthcare, domestic and international relocation and religious and irreligious upbringing.

Nick has considerable experience in cases concerning physical, sexual, verbal, emotional and financial abuse, at times spanning over 10 years. Nick regularly acts in fact finding hearings exploring serious allegations of abuse of this kind.

Nick also acts in Family Law Act 1996 applications for protective injunctions and regulation of occupation of the family home, including financial support and transfers of tenancies.

Nick's previous cases have also involved consideration of Articles 8 and 9 of the European Convention on Human Rights.

Nick further accepts instructions in financial remedy proceedings up to and including final hearings. His experience ranges from simple single asset disputes to more complex cases involving property held abroad, assets held on trust, testamentary bequests, family businesses and other share interests, insolvency and bankruptcy, material non-disclosure, wealth concealment and applications for third-party disclosure.

In addition to financial remedy proceedings under the Matrimonial Causes Act 1973, Nick also accepts instructions in Schedule 1 Children Act 1989 cases and has given training seminars on the procedure and recent case law in this area.

Nick also accepts instructions in applications for disclosure of papers from the Family Court into other proceedings including professional regulation and criminal prosecution.

Civil

Time as a paralegal afforded Nick valuable experience in civil litigation before coming to the Bar.

Nick has advised on possession and repossession proceedings including adverse possession.

Drawing on its overlap with trusts of the family home in financial remedy proceedings, Nick accepts instructions in TLATA 1996 cases; in addition to representation at hearings, he also accepts instructions to advise in writing at the pre-action stage and on specific points of law and procedure as well as general merits.

Crime

Nick has extensive experience in the Magistrates Court; he has both defended and previously represented the Crown Prosecution Service as a Grade 1 prosecutor.

Nick has prosecuted and defended cases involving violence, weapons offences, drug offences, sexual offences, public order offences, Communications Act and harassment offences, domestic abuse and breaches of protective orders.

Nick has enjoyed a steady motoring practice prosecuting and defending cases of drink and drug driving, dangerous and careless driving and sentencing hearings. He has a good track record of success in pleas of exceptional hardship or special reasons.

Nick has also appeared in successful sentencing appeals to the Crown Court and has separately represented local authorities in appeals of taxi licensing cases.

Nick previously prosecuted for the National Probation Service and continues regularly to appear in private prosecutions for enviromental offences as well as breaches of Community Protection Notices and Criminal Behaviour Orders.

Nick has also advised on and acted in Proceeds of Crime Act applications involving international money laundering and underground banking.
