Chambers is delighted to share the news that on the evening of June 14th, a private book launch was held for the publication of Austen Morgan's Pretence: Why the UK Needs a Written Constitution.
This celebration took place at Chambers itself because of the positive and inquisitive response from members of chambers when the jacket of the book was shared on the day of publication.
The event was a great success, with interesting and enjoyable speeches. Sandip Patel KC introduced the event on behalf of Chambers. Director and Founder of Black Spring Press - the publishing house dedicated to Austen's work - Dr S.T. Swift, gave a lovely overview of the book and of the pleasure it had been to work with Austen on this. The book itself was formally launched at the event by Dr Vernon Bogdanor.
Austen Morgan explained as he introduced the book that "I wrote this book – reflecting on the Brexit years (2016-20) during the pandemic – as a legal constitutionalist, and not as a wannabe politician much less a political activist – though I need both to respond if my big idea is to progress.'
Austen also describes the book as a workbook with 15 chapters, which does not need to be read from front to back.
"May I invite you – if politics, history and theory is not your favourite – to dip in and start with ‘devolution’ in chapter 10 or ‘human rights’ in chapter 12."
Signed copies are available on request and the book may be purchased here.
