Following a 3-day trial at the Crown Court in Portsmouth, Scott’s client was found not guilty of causing grievous bodily harm by the jury.

The defendant was not present for trial. The prosecution was granted permission to try the defendant in his absence. The absence of the defendant meant a positive defence case could not be advanced, but Scott’s cross-examination of prosecution witnesses, which was referred to as ‘Columbo-like’ by the trial judge, exposed the weaknesses in the prosecution case.
