Working Practices

Barristers are individual self employed professionals. Normally they are instructed by solicitors on behalf of companies but under the Bar Standard Board's Direct Access Scheme it is now possible to instruct accredited Barristers directly saving the additional expense of having to engage solicitors.

Barristers can assist with both contentious (ie Court disputes) and non contentious (ie advice and drafting) work.

If you engage a barrister you are engaging the services of that individual, however Chambers is able to assist you in engaging the services of several barristers where the breadth or complexity of the work requires it. Although each barrister is engaged seperately they will be able to work closely together to to assist in meeting your company's objectives.

Traditionally barristers are engaged for a fixed "brief fee" or on an hourly rate dependent on the nature of the work. Dependent upon your needs you may also be interested in entering into a "retainer" with a barrister whereby for a fixed monthly fee the barrister undertakes upto a certain number of hours work for your company per month. If you require the needs of the barrister on a full time basis you may wish to have the barrister seconded to your company on a self employed basis.
